It’s all in the cards… (Creative Writing Activity)

If students are having trouble being creative, use this activity to get the creative juices flowing.

Pass out three index cards (or scrap pieces of paper) to each student. Encourage students by telling them that someone else will be receiving their cards.

Instruct students to create a character on the first card. Give them a few minutes to do this. Anything about that character is acceptable. What she looks like… something that happened to her that is important to who she is… her likes and dislikes etc.

Next have students come up with two story changing events. The crazier the better.
Suddenly a time traveler appears.
Zombie squirrels rise from the earth.

The transitions are going to be abrupt. The stories are going to be silly and out of this world but it gets students writing.
